Events FAQ

Note: Our calendar is usually updated around the midpoint of each month. On our website homepage, you can sign up for our newsletter to be emailed about upcoming events!

Do I need to be a member of SAAA to attend events?

Non-members are welcome to attend any of our events! Our mission is to serve the Albertan a-spec community, and while we encourage you to consider becoming a member, it's not a requirement. Whether you attend events once in a while, or more regularly, we would love to see you.

What are "open" and "closed" events?

Open Events are open to the public, welcoming a-specs, other members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, allies, and anyone else who is interested in connecting with us, listening, and learning together in a respectful space. You can generally assume an event is Open unless it says otherwise in the title.

Closed Events are intended only for a-specs (including anyone who is questioning their identity or unlabelled) and their invited guests (such as friends or family, who might also be a-spec or an ally). These will be clearly labelled in the event title as "Closed".

Most of our events are Open, but we try to host a Closed event every couple months. This is because we recognize that some members of our community may not be as comfortable in public spaces, or prefer to have certain conversations exclusively with other a-specs & trusted allies rather than the general public.

Why are there no events in my city?

All of our events are hosted by our Events Committee - a team of volunteers who help organize events across Alberta. If you don't see events advertised in your city, this is likely because we don't currently have an Event Host in your area. Being a host is not a strenuous job; please see our Events Committee page if you're interested in volunteering!
